Tallulah has maintained a strong progressive political record throughout her public career, serving as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention and being named Secretary of State for Health and Human Services under Gov. Bill Clinton. Tallulah served as communications secretary to former Gov. Bill Alexander, and served as communications director for former Gov. Mike Ross. In addition to her many public achievements, Tallulah Bankhead has created her own publishing company, titled Tallulah’s Licks, which she controls. Her first two novels were set in or near Tallulah, Alabama, so it is only fitting that her third novel would be set in her hometown. Tallulah’s Licks tells the story of Tallulah’s married life and the effect that the change in her life, as a family woman and as an actress, has had on her love of country music. In this respect, Tallulah’s autobiography is very similar to the story told by herself in her novel, Just Me. The book reads just like Tallulah telling her story to the reader, although with Tallulah acting as the narrator.

Tallulah’s Licks picks up where Just Me left off, detailing the trials and tribulations of living in the spotlight as a country star in the late 20th century. As Tallulah was preparing to pen her memoir, she had to contend with the fact that not everyone in the country loved her and many of her fans were not even aware of her existence. It was these same people that made Tallulah’s Licks a sensation when it was released. The book was number one on the New York Times bestseller list and remained so for a significant amount of time.

Tallulah Bankhead’s story takes readers from the small town of Tallulah, Alabama, where she was born, to her days as a bulkhead on the Mississippi River. The book chronicles her travels, both romantically and otherwise, from her beginnings in vaudeville to her marriage to a wealthy man in London, to her years as an actress in Hollywood. In the final section of the book, Tallulah reflects upon her recent career, saying that the experience of being famous helped her become a better person. She credits her friends in Tallulah, Alabama, with helping her achieve such a status. Through Tallulah Bankhead, the readers will be introduced to yet another intriguing character who lived out her life in the spotlight.
