Hala Hajra Yamin was born in Karachi, Pakistan. Her father is Murtaza Yamin, who is a prominent political and social activist from Sindh province in Pakistan. Hala’s mother, Afshar Yamin, is an attractive, famous Pakistani beauty who appears in many magazine covers and also appears on television frequently. As a child Hala would watch her mother grow up on television. As a teenager Hala would also pursue other careers, one of them being acting, but she quickly changed her mind when it became apparent that acting was not her natural talent.

Hala first appeared on television as an actress in a television commercial, playing the role of a girl who falls in love with an alien. This would be followed by appearances on another popular TV show in Pakistan, Mansoor. This then became a regular role, and in 1986 she was cast to play a Bond girl in Goldeneye. While this film failed to do well critically, it did become a sensation in Pakistan and so Hala moved on to other small screen roles, most notably in a remake of Hindi movie called Bhumika in 1994. However, after this she decided to concentrate on playing Pakistani characters, and began playing the lead role in Urdu serials, where she would receive critical acclaim. Since then she has appeared in a number of Hollywood blockbusters, including Bridesmaids, The Pirates of the Caribbean, and E! Married with Children.

However, it was not until the late nineties that Hala started receiving serious recognition as a Pakistani actor. For her final film debut, she played the role of a Pakistani girl in the independent film Nights in Pink. Although this film failed to achieve the success that her previous films had, it did become something of a career high for Hala, and she went on to receive multiple Filmfare Award nominations for her work in this film. Later, as luck would have it, her starring role in the hit comedy Sheena Kapoor’s Bridget Jones Diary cemented her reputation as one of the finest Pakistani actors of all time.

It seems that luck is again in Hala’s favour as she is today seen opposite Tom Cruise in the movie Last Action Hero. The film has been received well by critics, and Cruise is widely expected to make a major hit with the release of this film. One interesting fact about Hajra Yamin, which you may not know, is that she was actually the main lead in the filmasia, before getting the role of Teja in Bridget Jones Diary. Hala’s contribution to the successful making of the film was the role of Teja, but nevertheless, she still enjoyed an impressive amount of popularity in Pakistan cinema, playing different supporting roles in Urdu movies and then playing the lead role in last year’s award winning Bridget Jones Diary.

Now let us move on to Hajra’s most recent role as a TV actress. This role marks the first time that she has been seen on-screen since her TV appearances in the late nineties. Since then, she has been busy doing advertisement campaigns for various companies, which means that her public life has become very hectic over the last few years. Her fans will no doubt be glad to hear that Hala has finally returned to the TV screen, and this time she is playing a lead character in a major television drama, as planned. It is hard to say whether Hala will manage to maintain the same level of popularity she achieved when she was a lead character in Bridget Jones Diary, but the odds are in her favour. If she manages to retain her popularity levels, she will surely continue to gain a leading role after leading role in different popular TV serials.

The best thing about Hajra Yamin’s recent stint on television is that it marks the first time that a Pakistani actress has been able to star in high budget, high profile, action-filled, international television dramas. This is definitely good news for Pakistan as many Hollywood movies have failed to open the mass media’s eyes to Urdu dramas. But with other actors coming into the limelight and with successful film releases, the role of an eligible TV actress will be in jeopardy in the near future. So don’t get yourself stressed out about this particular failure. Just relax and watch some popular Urdu TV serials on TV.
