Neha Hinge was born in a small village called Dharamshala in Uttar Pradesh, India. Her father worked as a carpenter and also took care of her mother during their younger days. Neha attended boarding schools before entering puberty. She excelled in Math, science, photography, and dance at school, but what really sealed her ticket to stardom was her selection for an all girl’s school in Allahabad. This was the first of many auditions that Neha would go on to win, including the fairly astounding “Miss Dovah” title in Heller Ayurveda, an Indian form of cosmetology.

Neha Hinge continued to perform well throughout her college years in spite of heavy casting calls for a part in Hindi films. One of her first major roles was in Hindi movie “Chak De! India” (which translates to “Dear God!”) She plays Devraj, a contemporary Indian actress who gets tangled in the web of love and murder while pursuing her dream of joining the British Royal family.

Neha Hinge’s first major role in English was in the Hindi movie “Mankatha” (which means “Star of the Royal Family”) opposite Madhya Pradesh Bhumiamalaki in 1994. Neha Hinge plays Nemadeha in the film, who falls in love with an English officer serving with the Central Reserve Police Force in India (CRISIL). However, Neha’s loyalties are divided when she is told that her friend Indira Gandhi (Nida Ramya), a Congress leader and wife of the late Rajiv Gandhi, enjoys drinking and even smoking marijuana on the beach while waiting for her husband to return from a long and exhausting tour of East Africa. The two women begin to quarrel when Neha finds that her friend has not returned from her trip. The film ends with Neha Hinge’s friend giving chase to Indira Gandhi on the luxury train headed for Chandigarh, which is owned by her friend Subodh Gupta.

Neha Hinge’s acting career then blossomed, and she began a string of excellent films, such as “Shodh”, “Chak De! India”, and “Yeh Chaiya Deewana”, and later “Chak De! Pakistan”. All these films earn Neha Hinge recognition in the international film industry, and in 1980 she received the first, best actress award from the Motion Picture Awards, at the Oscars, and subsequently appeared in some more prestigious international films, such as “A Man for All Seasons” in Australia and “Mann Ki Baam” in South Africa. Her association with Indian cinema also made her an Associate of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and she was later listed on the American Academy of Arts and Sciences’ list of the best actresses in the field of television.

Neha Hinge continues to be very popular among Indians of all ages, and has her own fan club. She has been cremated, but her body measurements have been preserved for future use. Her estate keeps her photo collection at file cabinets at her Pune home, along with birth certificates, wedding documents, and other memorabilia.
