The character of “The Box Girl” is based on the life of Barbara Cook, who was a singer for The Supremes and became a legendary singer and actress in her own right. Tovah has mentioned in interviews that her real-life inspiration was the real-life Box Girls. The role of Barbara Cook in the movies was modeled after former Boxerina who was also a talented singer and actress and who Tovah found fascinating and inspirational. Her real-life inspiration was an Israeli singer by the same name, Sarah Ben passively referred to as Barbara Cook. Tovah did a lot of research on Barbara Cook and researched the early life of Sarah Ben seeing as Barbara was an important figure in the creation of jazz, which Tovah supports.

As Tovah learned more about Barbara Cook and the early life of her and looked at the biographies and memoirs of her, she realised that her true identity was to be found in the stories of the women who followed her footsteps. It was obvious from reading numerous biographies and memoirs about Barbara Cook that Tovah had a particular fondness for the women she portrayed in her movies. So when Tovah decided to adapt the life of Benida Foa and Iraheta Coster to a screenplay, she knew right there and then that she wanted to be an artist, not just a singer. Tovah then decided to use the real life experiences of Iraheta Coster as well as the stories of other women in her movies. The result was an amazing cast of strong women, each with their own talents and strengths that come out beautifully in Tovah Feldshuh’s terrific movies.
