Following the conclusion of “A Christmas Story,” Oberon decided not to concentrate on acting, but to write a book about her life. In this manuscript, she described her feelings for her brother, Peter. She wrote about their close childhood experiences, including the death of a grandmother during the World War. Following the end of the war, they moved to Canada, where their father lived, and they began making movies. They received their first Academy Award nomination for “A Christmas Story,” but lost out on “A Woman for Sale.”

During the late nineteen eighties, Merle Oberon had an important role in one of the most beloved movies of all time, “A Christmas Story.” She played Nancy Spenser, the young girl who moves into a small house with her new husband, Doc. The couple’s daughter, Holly Golightly (Greta Scacchi), is left in charge of running the household, and Nancy has a strong run-away attitude. Her mother, played by Joanne Calderone, tries to protect Nancy from harm, but is killed in the process.

From this tragic beginning, Merle Oberon slowly reveals her inner being to the audience. After being diagnosed with lung cancer in the nineties, she dedicated her time to researching early American film history, focusing on the lives of early African-American actors and actresses. Following the death of her mother, Merle decided to spend her final days at the historically black-owned ashram in Upstate New York where she spent her last days writing and reading. In her book, “Eternal: My Last Days at the St. Ignatius Loyola Residential Home,” Merle Oberon reveals that she discovered her true destiny when a white passenger ship washes ashore after being wrecked off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, during the winter of 1939.

Following the crash, a pair of young men who claim to be related to the captain are the ones who visit Nancy and give her a tour of the wreck. As the tour progresses, they convince her to come aboard the ship, which they claim is their boat. Although she initially resists, Nancy finally decides to board the vessel and meet the pilot, Frank Lasko. According to the book, they then watch as the Laskos take off from Boston and set sail for Bermuda. Merle Oberon then spends the next several days visiting the wrecked wreck, while witnesses keep reporting seeing a strange craft in the ocean off the coast of North Carolina, that the Oberons believe is their ship.
