Following her mother’s untimely death, Mary followed in her footsteps and became active in the civil rights movement. Eventually, Blige was inspired to found her very successful acting career by reading Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech.

During this time, Mary J. Blige’s acting career also began to prosper when she received a Grammophone Golden Globe nomination for her song “ighters” (also written by The King of Rock and Roll), which was nominated in both the music and movie categories. Mary J. Blige finally returned to the limelight in the late sixties, when she began to work with the band The Temptations, which was headed by pop star, Rod Stewart. Her versatile voice easily fit into the rhythm and blues genre of music, which are commonly centered around the British music band The Beatles. While many assumed that Mary J. Blige would sign to the ever popular British rock band, The Beatles, Blige instead decided to focus her musical talents on creating an album of her own. The resulting album was Mary J. Blige’s second album, which was entitled Simply You. Mary J. Blige made quite a name for herself again, touring with the Beatles in later years. Mary J. Blige even went so far as to collaborate with John Lennon and Yusef Islam on their song, Remember Me.

Mary J. Blige’s third album, Soul Surfer, was released in 1970. Although this album did not reach the success of her previous two records, it did become one of her most well-loved hits. One of the biggest differences between Mary J. Blige’s soul music and the rhythm and blues of The Beatles, is the use of female vocals. The use of male vocals was common among other artists before Mary J. Blige, who was a vocalist first. Her vocal abilities helped to create some of the songs on this album such as “Take It Easy” and “Your Gold Teeth.”

With this impressive career, Mary J. Blige certainly has the credentials to prove that she has indeed made a name for herself as one of the more notable hip-hop soul singers of all time. Her impressive catalog of songs has sold over 50 million copies worldwide. Other artists such as Kanye West, Luther Vandross, Amy Winehouse, and numerous others have also produced and sang songs that were recorded by Mary J. Blige. Some of her songs were recorded by artists such as Smokey Robinson, James Morrison, and Aretha Franklin.
