Mariah Carey had a handful of singles that failed to chart or attract any significant fan base. “Go” from the aforementioned album (another title from the demo tape) was not one of those singles, but it did manage to squeak by with a Best New Artist nod. In contrast “Go” managed to garner a considerable following and has since become one of Mariah Carey’s more popular songs. The song has since gone on to feature on numerous other Mariah Carey albums including her latest effort entitled “Hips Don’t Lie.” While it is unlikely, “Hips Don’t Lie” will ever be a mainstream hit again, it has achieved enough popularity to still remain on numerous fan lists.

Mariah Carey has also experienced considerable success over her lifetime, especially as a vocalist. The single “Hips Don’t Lie” was followed up by hits like “Take Me Away” and “gettable” from the mid- nineties album “Mystery” and “Fantastic” from the late eighties album of the same name. Each of these songs became chart successes as they helped Mariah Carey achieves success in the singles’ category of music awards. During the mid-nineties, Mariah Carey was also nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Music Female Artist.” “Hips Don’t Lie” was not nominated this time. However, “gettable” did receive Honorable Mentions, while “Take Me Away” was robbed of a chance at a Best Song Oscar nomination.

Mariah Carey was then able to establish a reputation for successfully capturing the attention of listeners through her music videos, which also achieved considerable success. Her popular video for “Give Me The Reason” was the first of many that contained Mariah’s singing, which won her the Video Music Award for the Video Music Awards. The song is believed to have also been the first appearance of the famous “mottola” seen on old Opera singers, like Grande Vivi and Joanna da Costa. Later, the “mottola” would make appearances on other songs by Mariah Carey, including “Give Me The Reason,” “Happening” and “Love’s Always In The air.”

As she began making her mark in pop culture, Mariah Carey also became a crossover star with her male counterparts. She has featured in songs with big names like Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, Smokey Robinson, and Luther Vandross (who she was rumored to have been dating at one point). She has also recorded music with numerous artists such as Usher, J.Lo, Rihanna, and Ashanti. She has also written and produced several songs for some of today’s biggest rap stars.
