While Lauren was growing up in Manhattan, she also became very close friends with another young woman of the age of her father. These two young women became lovers, and Lauren would give baths to this other woman in order to please her. This relationship finally ended up with Lauren having an affair with Howard Carter, the famous author, when she went to Hollywood to study acting.

Lauren Bacall went on to star as many beautiful and fascinating characters in Hollywood as she did, and in fact, almost every role that you can name was based on someone else’s life or circumstances. She played a young nurse in “My Fair Lady”, a damsel in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, and a French maid in “My Fair Lady”. In fact, she played so many different types of characters that many people have actually asked the question: How did Lauren Bacall get such varied roles in such diverse flicks?

Well, first of all, one of the most important factors that influenced Lauren Bacall’s choice of plays to act in were her deep and abiding love of Jewish actors, both classical and contemporary. In fact, Bacall is not the first Jewish actress to have a successful Broadway run, nor the first ever. But, it was her early connection with Arthur Miller that really helped pave her way to Hollywood. After seeing “The Phantom”, which was written by Miller, Lauren Bacall decided that she wanted to be an acting talent that would parallel the great literature that made him famous. So, after seeing “The Phantom” and reading the book, Lauren decided that she wanted to follow in the footsteps of her hero. Her Broadway experience also influenced her to take on a more complex character in her last major film, “The Big Sleep”, opposite Keanu Reeves, whom she had never worked with before.

After seeing “The Graduate” and thinking that she had a shot at a role in “A Few Good Men”, but didn’t feel right for either of those two films, she decided to take a chance on a small independent movie starring herself as a teenager in New York City, “A Day in the Life of David Bowie” as well as playing the lead role in the adaptation of her own novel, “Love Actually”. These two films led to the more visible faces of Lauren Bacall, making her name even more recognizable to American audiences. She has since gone on to star in other mainstream movies, most notably the remake of “Love Actually” and the much-ballyhooed casting of Ed Harris in” shark man”. Lauren Bacall has also landed guest spots on television, most notably on” rappel” and “How I Met Your Mother”. But it is her association with the world of theater that is perhaps her greatest claim to fame. Lauren Bacall is the quintessential New York City theater actress/writer/ performer.
