Childhood was filled with poverty and heartache for Kathy Ireland. She was often picked on and not given much attention in the public school her father taught at. Eventually she was able to graduate from high school and go on to college to study acting. While at college, Kathy Ireland became interested in writing and would even write her own poetry in order to earn an allowance. Later in life she would become an assistant to an acclaimed playwright and one of the top authors in the field of children’s books. After many years acting, Kathy Ireland decided that it was time to try her hand at writing a book. Her first non-fiction book was entitled Never Cry Again: A Memorable Memoir of My Life As an Actress and the Emotion of Love, published by St. Martin’s Press in 2021. It tells the story of how an acting career can be full of highs and lows while living out the best and worst parts of one’s life. It tells the story of how Kathy Ireland gained insight to managing her emotional state both during and after her acting career.

In 2021 Kathy Ireland became a published author with her second memoir entitled How I Got To Be an American Actress. The memoir chronicles the rise of Irish celebrities from television shows such as Weeds and Glee to the modern day superstars of movies such as Harry Potter and Twilight. Although she acknowledges that she became a famous face of Ireland through her acting career, she says she has found that it was not the path that she had hoped for in terms of her personal or financial well being.

“I always dreamed of being a writer, but never thought that I could write a book,” she said. “But I am a writer and I have learned that if you want people to read about something, then you have to put out information that is worthwhile to them. And if you want them to pay money to see it, then you need to make sure that they get value for their money.” Both she and her co-writer have discovered that making a profit with one’s book does not have to be a major undertaking.

“The key was to tell a good story and leave out the things that do not interest you,” says Kathy Ireland. “We spent two years traveling around the United States, visiting various landmarks, cities, and farms. We had to be realistic about what we expected out of our journey. This book tells the history of a girl from a small town in California who rose to fame in the early life of Hollywood.”
