Swaran Lata was born in a town called Nazmul Sheikh, in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. Her father was a judge. Her mother died when she was very young, and Swaran Lata spent much of her early years in Pakistan without her parents. The first part of her life was spent in childhood in India, and she was known affectionately in some quarters as Nemade, or Mademoiselle Nemade, by the French. In fact the name of the Indian film actress who appears briefly in “azaatkaan”, Swaran Lata was also calling Nemade’s daughter.

At the age of seventeen, Swaran Lata went to the Zainkova Secondary School in Lahore to study for the matriculation exams. There she earned the name Swaranjeet, or Swaran, in honour of her great teacher. It is interesting to note that in the year 1924, the first all girls school appeared in Lahore, in the presence of the then ruler, Maharaja Jaswant Singh. It was Swaran Lata who encouraged women to pursue education and to achieve higher qualifications in their careers. It was through this path that she began to meet and work with people from a different strata of the society, and this eclectic combination of personalities formed the basis of her unique personality, which has endeared her to the masses ever since.

As a film actress, Swaran Lata has achieved some remarkable achievements, but perhaps her finest work to date would be her acceptance into the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Delhi). Her first film after breaking into Hindi films was the release of “Chhota chaal ke liye jo kamal kiya” with Farah Khan, and she is to this day hailed as one of the most accomplished female actors in Pakistani cinema. It is only too common to hear of a young lady who goes on to establish her name in Urdu cinema, while her graceful, dreamy facial expression still endears millions to her work. The only actor who could have a similar effect on audiences across Pakistan and India is actresses Shimla Ashraf Ali and Sharmeena Begum. These two ladies have set new standards for all future female performers in Pakistan and India.
