Barbara Hershey was one of the few female celebrities who did not get the chance to star in a feature-length film as a child, as her only contribution to the world of cinema by that point was in a short play written by her mother. Despite this, Hershey made a name for herself in the world of theatre, playing the villainess in the Broadway play Death of a Salesman (which was later made into a stage play and later an animated movie), as well as appearing in a number of comedies including One Hundred Best Things (in which she plays the foul-tempered secretary to an agency where you can also find fellow actresses). Most importantly, though, Barbara Hershey was one of the first celebrities to be involved in the long and illustrious career of George C. Scott, wherein he played the title role of astronaut John Kennedy. She also appeared in several films such as Meet the Parents (which has Barbara Hershey in the first role that could make her a candidate for best female actor nominee at the Oscars), Grease (in which she plays Bobby Brown) and Rosemary (where she played the sister of Jackie Earle Haley).

During the late sixties and early seventies, Barbara Hershey had what many refer to as a mid-life crisis. This happened when she had a baby and decided to quit acting. Although she never considered a return to the theatre, after a while she started appearing on television shows that were dedicated to helping women in certain situations, such as raising children or working in less than ideal conditions (such as being a waitress). She was also a member of the American group Therapy Corp., an organization dedicated to finding solutions for women who are trapped in abusive relationships, and which she joined in order to get out from under the heavy debts he had incurred while still acting.

Barbara Hershey was born in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of parents who were Russian immigrants. After her family came to America, Hershey lived in New York City for a short period and then moved on to Los Angeles. Although she never made a feature film while living in L.A., she did appear in a number of short movies that were shot during the time she lived there, and her acting debut was in the animated TV series Monroes. The TV series Monroes lasted only one season, but it was able to keep viewers interested in what would be Hershey’s final role. After the series ended, Hershey decided that she wanted to pursue a different career path, and in 1998 she went into self-paralegal work, specializing in criminal law, before she decided that a theatre career was the right thing for her.
