Archana was born in Tamil Nadu state of India and was educated in Kannada, Koodal, and Kandy. Her father, S.S. Rajamouli, was a famous Kannada writer and film producer, and his mother, P.S. Mani was a talented dancer. Both of them studied acting in Kannada, and she graduated with first class in film studies at R.S.Naught School in Kandy.

Archana has worked in some well-known Tamil cinema films such as Thuppakki (K.S. Mani), Tika (S.S. Mani), Yummy Nutty (S.S. Mani), Pazhikode (P.S. Mani), Veli (V.S. Vinnickambakkam), and Thuppakki Ka (Thuppakki).

After getting a degree in film studies, she joined the prestigious ICFA (IN Film Coaching Institute), where she underwent training in various aspects of film making, from storyboarding to audio mixing. She has also worked with some of the finest directors in India. Her experiences include working with Kollywood’s S.S. Mani, M.S. Ramya, N.R. Karanjith, and Ravi Teja.

Archana’s love for films started during the late eighties, when she saw Mani in its entirety for the first time. She was fascinated by the melodious dialogues, the painterly paintings, and the epic scale that these films were shooting in. This made her want to work on music videos and small films as well. However, it was her stint in Telugu films that really whetted her appetite for becoming a full-time actress.

Archana was married to S.S. Mani from a previous marriage, and the couple had three daughters. After her marriage, she decided to take on different acting roles in varying capacities, and even appeared in a remake of Hindi film “Chak De! India” (1985) with Mani’s son. She also appeared in an episode of Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, and sang the song “Windswept Land” in that movie as well. Archana was also nominated for an Oscar for her contribution to the hit action/adventure series kicks, as well as her performance in the animated science fiction movie “Robot Carnival”.

However, it was her role in the hit Bengali movie “Kismet” that really won her over. In this film, Archana stars as Dora, a young woman who is orphaned following a plane crash. She ends up at a boarding school run by the Ngai Orishtlin, where she is devastated by the sight of her dead mother. Although she eventually falls in love with an older man, she is unable to pursue the relationship due to her upcoming wedding. The film also chronicles her rise to become one of the best martial arts experts in the city.

Archana’s Bengali films did not receive the recognition they deserved at the time, and some people have even accused her of merely playing the fool. However, with time, she began to receive critical acclaim for her performances. She finally received the honors she deserved for her contribution to the genre, when she was finally given a Best Actress award at the 1996 Satellite Awards. Apart from her acting accolade, she also was nominated for the first time for the lead role in the science fiction action film “The Day the Earth Stood Still” in the year 1997. Other notable awards for Archana include winning the Golden Palm at the 1996 Toronto International Film Festival, the Best Screenplay Award at the 1997 MTV Asia Music Awards, as well as the Satellite Awards for Outstanding Actress in the Television Series -presented by CNN.
