Phyllis has always maintained a strong interest in the arts, especially in acting, which is evident in the broad variety of projects that she has been involved with throughout her career. Most of her career, however, was devoted to playing the lead character in a fantasy series, primarily in network or TV shows. It was with the release of the movie Trading Places (also known as Meet the Parents), in 1980, that she finally achieved the success that she had long been hoping for in her career.

The movie itself follows the life of young director David Storey (Quay) and his assistant, Ellen Ashford. David is a struggling screenwriter who lives in a small town in Louisiana, while Ellen is a beautiful woman who works as an actress in Hollywood. The two are constantly in conflict with each other over Ellen’s romantic relationship with David, which eventually leads to their separation. Shortly thereafter, David gets fired from his job, and Ellen flees across the country, seeking refuge at David’s house. Here, they encounter hundreds of zombies and the infected plague that killed millions in Napoleonic times.

Following a near-fatal outbreak in Singapore, Phyllis and Ellen travel to New York City to seek refuge at the Center for Disease Control (CDC). While there, Phyllis meets her latest co-star, a man named Jacob Blackwood, who informs her about the outbreak in Singapore and the virus that caused it. When the virus begins to attack the human body, Phyllis must find a cure for it or else the humans will die off one by one. Armed with this information, Phyllis pursues Jacob and finds him with another woman, Amber, in Singapore, who also has been infected with the deadly virus.

Though The Ring Movie made Phyllis Quek into a household name in the world of movie stars, her role as the unforgettable Rachel Dawes still remains her biggest claim to fame. She is perhaps best known for her portrayal of the lead character in the series Searching for somethings which escapes the grave in Searching for Something that was made by her son Peter Quek. Other notable roles include the lead role in the TV sitcom ER, the recurring role of Dot in the TV sitcom Laguna Beach, the recurring role of Mrs. Pauline in the movie Pretty Woman, and the lead role in the TV drama 24.
