Phan Wait Hong is an award winning singer, actress and singer/songwriter who have over 30 years of experience in the world of theater. A first generation Chinese girl, she grew up in Singapore and early in her career became a popular face of Singapore’s Chinese community. She rose to stardom with a series of hit tunes and went on to receive many awards for her roles in musicals and films. Her extensive resume also included such roles as on Broadway, in films such as Down On The Mean Road and Love Actually and more recently in numerous TV dramas. Phan Wait Hong is now best known for her vocals, which have won her Grammys and Emmys.

Phan Wait Hong studied singing at the Beijing opera troupe, where she honed her skills under the guidance of master actors and directors. There she found her true calling and was soon playing the lead role in her first full-length musical, Angels Weeping Brides. The film version of the musical went on to become one of the most successful shows in China ever. From there she went on to star in several other hits including Angels Weeping Marriage, You’re Not Alone and Now You’re Here. She has also gone on to voice major characters in animated films such as Kung Fu Panda and The Tale of Mr. Tambourine Man.

Phan Wait Hong’s journey to stardom has also taken her to other parts of the world. She was one of the founding members of the world-renowned Singlish theatre company of South Korea. After that she spent four years in Australia where she honed her vocal talent and appeared in a number of critically acclaimed plays and musicals. While back in Asia she managed to win a string of Best Actress Awards in both Japan and Hong Kong.

Phan Wait Hong now lives in Singapore and enjoys a busy and hectic life as a multi-faceted entertainer. Her numerous awards and accolades are only the tip of the iceberg however as far as careers in the film industry are concerned, she is quite best known for her lovable characterisations of lovable maladies like the “Singing Virgin” and the lovable “Honey Dogs”. A rare breed of woman who has a flair for the dramatic as well as the performing arts, Phan Wait Hong has achieved stardom not by winning awards but by creating characters whose presence leaves you gasp and who move you to tears. In some ways it is her versatility that has made her such a successful and popular artiste. No wonder that even after so many years of performing, she remains an individual who leaves you with warm feelings of appreciation for her talents and her heart.

Phan Wait Hong first began to study opera at the age of 15 when she was cast in the play The Singing Teacher. She did not disappoint her directors and the director of the play encouraged her to try out singing opera full time. This lead to her hone her skills in the different local language performances that she undertook all through her early life in both Singapore and China. While in her early years she sang mainly for the family and close friends, in her later years she found herself fronting different genres of opera, singing different types of songs depending on where she was going. As she grew older, she decided to take on higher roles and hone her skill for which she went to study at the Beijing Opera Institute under the tutelage of Bo Li-hsi and later at the National Opera of Singapore. Now at the age of 72, Phan Wait Hong is still an enigma to many people, given her sheer longevity and yet just what makes her so special is her ability to maintain the integrity of the roles she has portrayed time and again.

Phan Wait Hong is currently seen in the plays The Singing Butler, Come How You Can, Long Live I Love China and One Day We’ll Live Together Again. In all these plays she has shown superb skills as the enchantressress Jingfang who was initially introduced in a play called The Boxer. This role then earned her appearances in other plays such as The Man With One Red Arm and The Little Match Girl as well as appearing in numerous blockbuster movies such as Meet The Parents. Now as a renowned sing singer, Phan Wait Hong continues to delight the audience with her impeccable talent.
