Subbulakshmi Biography is one of those fascinating Indian epics that has captured the imagination of many people over the years. Subbulakshmi, or Subbulakshmi in Sanskrit, was an ancient Indian Carnatic vocalist from Madurai, Tamil Nadu. She was probably the very first singer to be given the coveted Bharat Ratna, India’s top civilian award. Born as Subbulaka Sankarani, she was probably brought up as a girl with the name ‘Subbulaka’ given by her father to welcome guests in the family home.
The story goes that Subbulakshmi fell sick and was taken care of by a doting father who gave her all the material she needed to practice the art of Carnatic singing. She also received training from a number of Carnatic singers and musicians including Kasyani Subbulakshmi, Jatin Lalit, Ashok Deshpande, Kanhopatra Kinikar and Kamalashwa (Nasya) Subbulakshmi. After a brief stint in England where she appeared in several musicals, she decided to return to India and to perform at the famous Durga Puja in Madurai.

Subbulakshmi performed at this temple dedicated to Lord Karthikeyan and was warmly welcomed by the devotees who believed that she had performed a great service by performing at such an important place. Subbulakshmi began to compose sadasivam for the temple on her return from England and after some time she composed the very popular ‘Kathakali’ that is still popular today. She wrote this salsa which is a very emotional piece and is one of the most significant poems ever written about Lord Karthikeyan. Subbulakshmi’s work is loved and appreciated by both Indian and foreign music lovers.
Subbulakshmi performed at the famous Banaras festival, which was organized by Ravi Bhargava. She was welcomed by the Vaiyarishta who was one of the biggest saints in Madhya Pradesh. Later she performed at the Chilka Lake, where she sang a special hymns in praise of Lord Shiva. Subbulakshmi wrote some of the most popular balayishats in the tradition of tarzanand and kirtans. After her performances at these important events she realized that she wanted to share her knowledge of shanmukavadiver dance with people all over India and so she began teaching lessons in this style of dance all over the country.
Subbulakshmi’s life and works were so exceptional that even today she continues to inspire new artists. Some of her most well known students include Kanjeevaram, Subodh Gupta and Yash Raj, who are currently very popular artists with global recognition. Kanjeevaram is a dancer who choreographs and writes his own songs and has made twenty movies. Subodh Gupta is an award winning classical violinist who has made twenty movies and choreographs. Yash Raj is a choreographer and singer. All of these great artists have become testament to the influence of Subbulakshmi’s influence on Indian and international dance.
Subbulakshmi Biography has inspired and educated hundreds of performers. This is in addition to her many academic and honors achievements including the Bharat Ratna and the Order of Maharaja. Subbulakshmi is one of the greatest dancers of all time and has inspired thousands of others with her work. She is a true cultural ambassador of India and a national treasure.
