Soundarya Sowmya, first appeared in her first film Dweepa, in 1970, as the villainous character Gorgi. The role was initially played by S.S. Rajamouli, who had originated from Kannada state in South India. Rajamouli changed his name to Soundarya Sowmya after appearing in some more Telugu and Kamaraj film. He later went on to star in a number of films in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Soundarya’s first film in this genre was titled Apmanayil, which was directed by S.S. Rajamouli. It is largely remembered for its steamy romance, set against the backdrop of simmering tensions between the erstwhile British colonizers and the newly established Indian Nationalists. The film depicts how Soundarya rises to prominence in society and is instrumental in changing the course of events. Another important milestone in her filmography was the release of her first all-star feature in 1971, titled Ashiya Devar, which was opposite Madhubala. The movie was a flop, but helped her reputation grow considerably.
