Laya is an Indian female actress and dancer who, initially, were known for her performance primarily in Tamil films, alongside Malayalam, Kannada and Kuchipudi. Laya later became a household name with her notable performances in movies such as Laya, Maqbool Fida Husain’s Tintu… and Maqbool Fida Husain’s Yaa Gyari. Laya’s role as an actress made her a name in the world of cinema. She also began a love affair with Rajkumar Swayambara, an award winning Marathi singer. Together they came out with a string of hit songs and went on to have numerous number one hits.

Laya was born in a small village called Thrikakara, in the southernmost part of Karnataka. Her father worked as an assistant to an oil tycoon. Laya’s mother encouraged the actress to pursue her acting career since the then owner of that same oil company was a well-established film star of her time, Yash Chopra. Laya studied at RK School, Hyderabad, and thereafter she joined Kranti College in Thiruvananthapuram. As a student, she maintained a very good academic record, and it was this fact which gave rise to her being named in a famous laya biography of superstar Ashok Kumar.
