Diane Franklin is an American crime writer who has written over forty novels. She is best known for her suspense, fantasy, and horror novels. Her other popular books are the erotic mystery series The Abominable snowmen (1982 1986), the series featuring Missrees, and the fantasy novel The Necromancer. In fact, she co-created, along with Michael Crichton, the television series featuring Philip Marlowe in the novel The Perfect Pair. Franklin also wrote a book entitled Invisible Monsters: A Fantasy Thriller.
Diane Franklin was born in Brooklyn, New York City and was raised in Ireland. She has been described as being very shy throughout her life and has not been involved in any romantic relationships since she was fifteen years old. She was a good student throughout her school years, but did not excel in mathematics and science. After high school, she went to study English at a college in Portland, Oregon. She met and became involved in writing as a way to earn money for her necessities, but this did not last long. She then began to write mystery novels while still in college, but these did not go over well as readers did not find the plots interesting or the characters believable.

In the late eighties, she began appearing in television shows, but these did not go over so well as the audience was not interested in her as a romantic lead. Instead, she appeared in movies that revolved around police brutality and crime. Throughout the following decade, she appeared in several movies, including one with a young Richard Castle and one with an aging Anne Bonny and Mary J. Blige. She is not, however, included on the best known female crime writers list of crime writers for her lack of attention to romance and women’s characters in her novels.
Throughout her movies career, Diane Franklin garnered various awards for the screenplays she wrote, including an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. However, her most notable and successful period in her filmography occurred after her marriage to Richard Castle. She went on to star in some of the best films of the seventies and eighties that put her in the forefront of the entertainment world as an iconic and accomplished actress. Her films that centered on women and romance also won many awards, including a Best Picture Oscar for Roman Holiday.
Her most popular and most notable role would be that of Washington D.C. attorney, Sookie Stackhouse, in the popular movie Everybody Loves Raymond. She had previously appeared in other television shows and had previously worked in several movies, such as Saturday Night Fever, My Fair Lady, and Grease. It was after this period that she decided to get into writing, penning a series of novels about people who fall in and out of love in Washington, D.C. That is also when she decided to make a movie about her life as a famous past-time attraction in Washington, D.C.
Although it would be somewhat of a stretch to label Diane Franklin as a romantic or even flirting female, she certainly did try to give off hints that she felt a strong connection to her fans, at least in part due to the number of past relationships she had. In one of her last interviews prior to her death, she was asked if she had any regrets about her past relationships. She responded by saying that although she was happy with her relationships, she always regret not being more. This may very well have been her greatest lesson in life, regarding the value of having a life and enjoying the good and bad that comes along with it.
