Tarunii Sachdev is a prolific author. She has been described as the “feminine Indian author of large stature” and has won many awards for her books including the Man Booker Prize, the Carnegie medal and the Prix Renova. Her novels have also won critical acclaim in the West as well as India. Tarunii’s first book in English was The Lovers and I was earlier published in 2021 and followed by The Lost Weekend, which was later made into a feature film starring Aishwarya Rai and went on to become one of the year’s best-selling films of all time.

Tarunni continues the story of Lovers and me with another novel entitled Tarunni’s Lullaby. The story revolves around a disturbed girl staying with her aunt in their small house. After she is assaulted by a boy, she flees the scene but not before she manages to give birth to her son. After the incident, she becomes very confused and does not know what to do with her child and thus decides to sell her body to a butcher.

However, lo and behold, the butcher’s family thinks that she has been selling her body for too long and decides to have her deadised. Tarunni is soon found dead at her home by her own sister. This book chronicles the tragic life of Tarunni, the woman who chose to stay with her family despite the odds against her and faced the repercussions of her decision. The book is full of love and respect for women and the beautiful Tarunni – a perfect specimen of a modern woman – who chose to be a wife and mother instead.

Tarunni’s Lullaby is written in a delicate and very personal style that leaves the reader completely engrossed in the storyline. The book employs a chronological order and thus begins with the death of Tarunni’s sister. We slowly come to understand the reasons for this death and the reasons for Tarunni’s bra size (in fact, there were multiple reasons given). As the story progresses, we learn more about Tarunni and how her size (and the subsequent stigma attached to it) impacted upon the rest of her life.

After her death, though, Tarunni’s body is discovered by some men who are looking for a good bride. But instead of running off to marry one of them, Tarunni decides to remain in Bhopal and look after her daughter with the money she made after her death. The men later help out her daughter in getting an education. Though the story ends with Tarunni married and with her daughter thriving, she is forever altered by her bra size and the society’s perception of women who have large bra sizes.

Tarunni’s Lullaby is not only a touching, sad book about a woman left alone in order to care for her daughter; the book also provides a window onto Indian women and the way they were forced to accept and love their bra size. This is something most other books would never do. Tarunni is not glorified. She is a normal, educated woman, who happened to have been ‘different’ from other women because of her bra size. And while her story may not be a unique one, it is a very human one, told in a very relatable way.
