Samaire Armstrong is one of those rare superstars who managed to reinvent herself time again. Though her name does not exactly scream “fashion star”, she has managed to get a huge amount of fans due to the various roles she has played in the recent past. She has been in the limelight since the mid-nineties and has always managed to be in the headlines, whether it is about fashion film, or television. We shall discuss her famous role as the lead character in the Coen brothers’ film The Graduate.
During the early days of her career, Samaire Armstrong was actually based in Tokyo, Japan. However, after the success of The Graduate, she had to shift to Los Angeles, California, and to Hawaii. In fact, before she even moved to the tropical paradise, she had already made a name for herself in the world of fashion design, having worked with some of the most well-known designers of the time. Her stint in Hollywood came at a time when Hawaii was almost completely unoccupied by tourists, which is something that we would all like to think of ourselves.
Samaire Armstrong’s official biography in the Coens’ The Graduate states that she was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on the thirty-first of October, 1917. According to this book, Samaire was also named Samuel P. Armstrong, though this was later corrected by the producers of the film itself. She did go to high school in Waipahu, but did not continue her education until she was twenty years old. After completing a degree in marketing, she moved to Tokyo, Japan to work as a translator for a number of years, working first in advertising before going to acting, among other things. From there, she moved back to Los Angeles and appeared in a number of films including Rosemary Clooney’s Saturday Night Fever, which is also the subject of an upcoming biopic.
One other teen movie star that we would like to mention on the same note is Megan Fox. It should be noted that although she is half American, Megan has more Japanese blood in her than the typical American. This was made very clear in the anime series Black Butler, in which she was raised in Japan. Also, she went to high school in Japan. Finally, it should be noted that Samaire Armstrong also appeared in another teen movie, called The Courtship of Miles Standish, which is a direct-to-DVD sequel of the well-known anime High School Musical.
