Padma Lakshmi is a renowned character in Indian literary history. She is the daughter of King Padma and Queen Lakshmi of Jodhpur. Padma was the next in line to the throne of her father, the revered Mauryas. Born as Padma Lakshmi during the year 1002 AD in the city of Jodhpur (now in Uttar Pradesh, India), she was a talented and charming child who delighted in the finer points of life. Though she had been said to be the spitting image of her mother, Padma was actually no more like her. She was described as beautiful and talented by her biographer, Swadanath Chaturvedi.

Padma’s life was the stuff that legends are made of. Though all indications lead us to believe that she was a clever and intelligent woman, it is clear from her writings that her greatest joy and delight came when in the act of living. She enjoyed discussing and analyzing various topics ranging from architecture and philosophy to sports and human nature, in her passionate love for life.

Padma’s writings are full of a sense of humor and often mock at both herself and her father-in-law. But underneath those writings there lies a woman with extraordinary intellect who possessed an adventurous spirit. Though small in build, Padma was known to engage in athletic activities. She excelled at several sports and was particularly good at football, wrestling and running. She never though of losing any of these games, but always trained hard to win. The biographer tells us that Padma never lost to her opponents even though she often injured herself during matches.

Padma’s bust size was average to large for her age and height was average. She had brown hair which is called ashwagandha, which gives her the brilliant blue eyes. From her marriage to her death, Padma displayed a lot of creativity and courage. She wrote extensively on different subjects ranging from love and sex, religion and politics, nature and philosophy. She held many beliefs that were different from the prevalent social views at that time. She believed in reincarnation and believed in the ‘purity’ of the soul after death.

According to the Padma Lakshmi biographer Rupali Dutt, Padma didn’t use to menstruate but since her marriage to Kasyua, she began to bleed during child birth, giving rise to a cycle of six periods. Padma was extremely popular among the people of her time, as people thought that women who didn’t menstruate were prone to witchcraft. She was sometimes even burnt alive for being a witch.

She was born in Kanyakumari, Kerala and was the daughter of a prominent lawyer and politician. The book quotes some of her most poignant moments which reveal her brilliance and her great courage as a young girl with small bra size. Rupali describes how she ignored all the odds and challenges to excel in life despite her handicap which was a chronic back pain.
