Ellen Drew was born in 1924 and was a young girl when her parents were drownished in the flu. Ellen lived with her grandparents and two uncles who took care of her. She later lived with her mother in San Francisco. She was a bright child who became very good at Math and History in school. She excelled in both subjects.

Ellen grew up in a home where her mother took upon herself to be a very strict cook. She cooked elaborate meals for the entire family on Christmas eve. Ellen was always teased about her looks and intelligence, but she continued to learn about her passion for writing in her youth. She attended Harvard University where she earned a degree in English. She also studied abroad in France and worked as a reporter in New York City.

Later, she moved to California and worked in a nightclub in Los Angeles.

After she moved to California, Ellen Drew returned to New York and worked in the fashion department of John F. Kennedy’s Presidential campaign. She worked as a clerk in the office of campaign manager Earle Cole and was a receptionist at Tiffany’s. She worked on assignment for Time Magazine, Esquire magazine, Ladies’ Health, Life magazine, Cook’s Illustrated, Vogue, Brides and others. In 1931 she decided to take a break from work and pursue writing full time. She wrote her first novel entitled “Walk in the Door” which was later turned into “How I Live Now.”

In 1938 she began drawing professionally and was nominated for an Academy Award for her work in “My Fair Lady.” She also was nominated for an additional Oscar for “My Fair Lady.” Ellen Drew was nominated for seven additional Academy Awards for her work in “My Fair Lady,” “The Secret Life of Bees,” “A Christmas Story,” “Where Have All The Flowers Gone” and “Lilies” and was awarded the Best Original Screenplay award for “My Fair Lady.” It was after these honors that Ellen Drew earned the rank of Screen Actress of the Year for “My Fair Lady.”v
