Deepti Sati was born in the city of Jaipur in Rajasthan. She was the daughter of Ajatsatru, the foremost warrior of the Mauryas. Depti’s father was an important adviser of Ajatsatru and his life was marked by the violent battles fought between the two. Ajatsatru was very close to his sister, Depti Sati and he used to say that she was like a daughter in every possible way.

Depti was married to King Ajatsatru’s younger brother Viswain who was very unhappy with Depti’s attitude towards his elder daughter. Depti always refused to wear a saree and only wore her embroidered salwar kameez on festive occasions. Viswain tried to force her to do this but Depti would not yield and it was this attitude which resulted in Depti committing Sati on 21 July, AH 1099. This was the beginning of the end for Depti’s husband.

Depti was not in the habit of wearing a saree or any other clothing that could be considered ceremonial wear and was always dressed in simple yet well-fitting clothes. She had a great liking for embroidered clothing and would even wear them even when she was away from home. The reason for her liking of embroidery is not clear but it is possible that it helped her to imbibe the spirit of her beloved father in her mind and imbibe a sense of her patriotism in her very mind.

Depti was known to have long preferred casual dresses to the customary Rajput sarees and always worked in heavy embroidery thread work and heavy brocade fabric. This was another reason why she was deeply disliked by her husband. On one occasion, Depti did not feel like wearing her saree and so instead of going to her house for work, she went to the nearby desert to fetch a new bra size in the new area which her husband had not given her. This was a great humiliation for Depti as she felt that she had lost her place in the society. This led to a great rift between the two, which was exacerbated by Depti’s love for embroidery work that she was passionate about.

There are many other facts in the Depti sati biography which make this book very interesting and educational. Firstly, we learn that Durga who was the main wage earner for the couple had also been involved in the embroidery work previously. Secondly, we learn that Sati was Depti’s only child and also her only friend. Sati’s brother Hemana was a worker in a printing shop and used to bring his brother there every day to help him. Hemana was also a very close aide and trusted by Depti. He was the only male among the three who knew the whereabouts of Sati and would visit her with the intention of offering his help.

In the end of the Depti sati biography, it is clear that the marriage of Depti to Lord Brahma was intended as a way to save her life when her husband Jain arranged for her to beheaded. However, the biographer also points out that after her marriage Jain did not tell her husband about his intended bride. It can therefore be concluded that Sati was already married before Jain told her husband of his choice. Another fact that is revealed in this book is that the marriage between Depti and Brahma was not consummated as initially planned but it was done under the influence of a Brahmin who offered to marry Depti and get her to inherit his property. This ultimately helped the couple to overcome the obstacles that were impeding their marriage.
