Charmy Kaur, also spelled as Charmy Kaur, is an Indian actress and former actresses. She is widely known for her roles primarily in Telugu film industry, and some Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Bollywood movies. She has appeared in over forty films altogether. Most of her films have been on the big screen. She was married to Ajith Kumar in the early sixties.

A.S. Rajamouli was the first person to make a biography of Charmy Kaur. He based the biography on her life and her various works. Later he expanded the book into a novel as well. In the novel, the writer tried to portray Kaur as an original personality, not a product of her times. The novel was a bestseller and the third book in the Telugu Kannada Bollywood blockbuster franchise was titled as Charmy Kaur Goes Home.

The writer of the novel revealed that Charmy Kaur was born as Amrita Sher-Gil, in Orrissa state in India. She was the daughter of a prominent politician. Her parents had many other children, but she was left alone in childhood. She was one of three children of Ajit, a prominent socialite of Andhra Pradesh. He was a leader of the anti-vice legislature party. This was a time when she was deeply influenced by her family’s communal background and she even wanted to be a part of it, though at a later stage she detested it.

It was a very interesting experience for Charmy Kaur to be cast as the lead role of Neeta inside the Telugu film world. She was the only woman in the film who played a pivotal role. She has been applauded by her peers for playing the lead role. Neeta was the lover of the character of Nalin, the Hyderabad detective.

After her first major film ‘Neeta’, Charmy Kaur appeared in four more Indian movies, all of which did well. She was nominated for an Oscar and she did win one for her role as a dancer in the movie of the same name. Then came the starring role in the biopic of Mahabaleshwar, where she starred alongside Ajit and Rajinikanth. Then she made an impressive cameo in the movie ‘Killer’, in which she played the young Tamil female wife of a terrorist leader. She finally received an accolade for her performance from the National Awards for the Best Supporting Actor category for her performance in the film ‘Chilli’ in which she played the sister of the hero of the film.

Charmy Kaur is yet to receive any major award for her performances in the Telugu film industry. Apart from the National Awards and the Best Actress category, her two first Bollywood movies have also failed to woo any major accolades. Her first film in English was ‘Chilli’ and she didn’t win any awards for it. She was also nominated for the same but lost out to Deepika Padamsee for the best actress category in that film. All in all, Charmy Kaur is yet to be recognized by the Indian Film Council as a true Indian star.
