Bettye Ackerman was an actress and art director known for such films as “The Quiet Man”, “Sleepless Nights” and “The Girl With One Pearl”. Her name is synonymous with the art world, having worked with some of the most notable artists of her time including Frank Capra, Wyland likewise with Dietrich Rodricks, Lee Strasberg, Barbara Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, and many others. Her works are well-known throughout the world. She is one of the few women to have won Oscars for both acting and directing.

Bettye Adler was born in 1924 in cottageville, south Carolina, where her father, a share dealer, was also raised. She attended the private preparatory school Le Cordon Bleu in Washington, D. C. She majored in philosophy and languages, and studied ballet at the University of Chicago, graduating in 1932. Her career spanned four decades, during which she received six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. After retiring from acting in 1940, she pursued painting, drawing, writing, and sewing, living in New York City and Paris. She died in Los Angeles in February of 1961.

“The Girl With One Pearl” is the third of Bettye Adler’s “Famous Five” series. It takes place in New Hampshire in the late summer of 1924. The story follows Bettye as she moves back home to Georgia from the west coast to live with her sister, Doty. This is where her tragic love affair with Fezzik comes to light. She gazes at him in awe as he admires the sunset, but he ignores her request for a ride home. As their friendship blossoms, Bettye learns that her sister had secretly been trying to seduce Fezzik since he visited their cottage on the southwest coast.

On their way back from the train, Bettye’s sister decides to stop at a hotel, which proves to be a bad decision as their cab driver is armed and ready to shoot if they do not get out of the cab. Their luck worsens when a drunk driver hits them, and then a group of German Bundists come out of nowhere, gunning down the driver. Betty and Fezzik are saved by the cabbie’s son, who then places a satchel bomb under the driver’s seat.

Bettye had previously worked on the sets of “The Rose”, “Million Dollar Baby”, “Forrest Gump”, and “All About Eve”. She has since appeared in movies such as “Sweeney Todd” and “E.T.” Her most recent film was the remake of “A Christmas Carol”, in which she played the mother to Carol Burnett’s young daughter, Daniella. Since then, she has appeared in “Windtalkers”, “Beverly Hills Cop”, “Waterford” and “Heroes” among other TV shows.

Bettye was married to John Thomas Agnello, a well-known writer and biographer. Their marriage to which they had no children is the subject of numerous biographies. Agnello, along with his family, moved to southern California and lived in Beverly Hills for a time. During this period, Bettye would go on to author at least twelve books of varying subjects, and also wrote articles for several periodicals. It is common to hear about Bettye and her family living in the small cottage on the southwest coast of Florida now known as Cottageville.
