Amy Adams was born in Chicago and grew up in a middle-upper class family. Her father, a doctor, served in the Army during World War II. Her mother, a talented pianist, taught herself to play the piano. Both Amy and her older brother, Daniel, became top rowdiest guitarists and she graduated from drama school in Chicago in 1957.
After graduation, Amy moved to Hollywood and appeared in such popular films as “A Christmas Story,” “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” and “Gidget.” She also went through a long career in the theater, playing different characters in such classic plays as “Romeo and Juliet” and “Macabre.” In the late sixties, she broke into Hollywood and played a supporting role in “Gaslight” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Her strong career as an actress ended with “A study in Miracles” in which she played the character of Rosemary, a deaf and blind woman who falls in love with an American serviceman. Her final film role was in “Camelot” as the loyal but deaf aide to King Arthur in the movie version of the Arthurian legend.
After her film career, Amy Adams again returned to television to play the starring role of Rosemary in “Rosemary” for which she received three Emmy Awards. Her other credits include appearing in “Who’s the Master?,” “The Perfect Score” and “All I Really Need.” Her TV series, “The X Files,” lasted one season and is currently streaming on Netflix. In recent years, Amy has been in the news because of her starring role in the award-winning film “oux!”
Amy Adams is not the only actor with an Academy Award nomination to have a film career that spans decades. Historically, Oscar Winners have a difficult time winning a second Oscar. However, in February 2021 Amy Adams became the first woman to win a Best Actor award for her role as FBI agent Dana Scully in the movie “The Girl With One Red Shoe.” She win marked the first Oscar for a female in nine years for the genre, and since then there have been only two women to win the Oscar for Best Actress in the same category. Both Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston have also won Best Actress Oscars. It seems that the gender divide in Hollywood is still an issue when it comes to winning a best acting Oscar, although it should be said that women have certainly made significant strides in winning supporting roles throughout the past decade.
