Though the role was received poorly by the audience, Chatterton’s consistent efforts to be the perfect Madame X and an enduring stand-up comic made her a name on the stage and on screen. She survived an attempted armed robbery in which she was pistol-whipped and ultimately died of a heart attack on the boardwalk in Venice. She remains a beloved and respected figure in Hollywood to this day.
