Harriet Rene “Khandi” Alexander was an American award-winning dancer, actress, and choreographer. She was a dance choreographer for the world tours of Whitney Houston’s band from the late 1980s through the first half of the 1990s. Khandi was also a dancer with the cast of the musical Hamilton on Broadway. Her credits also include appearances onscreen in films such as Pleasantville, Lea Michele’s Sweet Romance, and There’s Something About Mary.

Harriet Rene Alexander was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her mother, Ida Alexander, was an active part in the civil rights and anti-apartheid movements in her state. Her father, Robert Alexander, was a prosperous peanut farmer. She attended the Baptist Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas, for two years studying to become a Reformed minister. Her formal training came through a role as a dancer and singer in the Dallas Independent School District. After that she went to the John Wooden School in Fort Worth, Texas, for two years studying to become a teacher.

Khandi Alexander was an honors graduate from the University of Utah cum laude in October of 1994. She was also a recipient of the prestigious Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing from the Television Academy. Following that, she was cast as the title role in the series Happy Days, playing the role of Summer Glauberman. Khandi then played the title role in the ABC series Everybody Loves Raymond, playing the role of Allison Greene, before landing a role on Seinfeld. Khandi Alexander then played the roles of Summerrose in All I Really Need, kicking off a string of popular and successful movies.

Alexander began working as a dancer at tenements and nightclubs in New York City, performing both modern and contemporary styles of dance. Khandi also became a member of the cast of Footloose and performed with numerous other groups in both the United States and Canada. Khandi has also established her own personal name and has been profiled in several publications including People, InStyle, GQ, Allure, Seventeen, Brides and others. Khandi also appeared on an episode of Dancing with the Stars and currently has a song on the soundtrack of the movie Fantastic Four.

Khandi has also had opportunities for films and theater roles, including appearing in the independent film Ed Hardwick’s Something Good. Khandi is also set to star in the upcoming drama film Mommy to be alongside Idina Menzel, which is written by screenwriter David Fincher (The Social Network, The Curious Case Files). Khandi is also currently in pre-production on a feature length film entitled Lemonade Mouth, with the hope of having a release in the 2021 summer. This is a key role in a new take on the life of Dr. Seuss character Linus, following the events of his recent book and subsequent film.

Khandi Alexander has truly been a rising star in both the field of theater and film, especially in the last few years. She is an exemplary performer and it is clear that her path through her own career has not been easy, but she is determined to make it in this industry. Khandi Alexander has been nominated for Obie Awards in both the Television and Radio industries and is currently repped by representation from Independent Entertainment Artists, Talent Management and GK Films Inc. Her credits include appearances on the television series Law & Order: SVU, as well as memorable appearances on the screen and on stage in such celebrated production as Empire of the Sun and Boyz II Men. Khandi has also been featured on such high profile films as The Great Lie, Casino, The Fast and Furious, and is currently promoting the film adaptation of the novel The Blind Side.
