Diahann Carroll was born unutterably sad circumstances-both literally and figuratively. She was six years old when her parents, immigrating from Ireland, lost their first-born son to typhoid fever. When her younger brother died in the hospital just six weeks after birth, Diahann was so upset that she decided to drop out of school. She missed her first day of school, although she returned on the second, and third days. Finally, a teacher who knew her story of tragedy persuaded her to attend St. Patrick’s Catholic School in New York City.

Diahann was an energetic, extroverted child who excelled as a ballet dancer, an actress, and a singer. She began learning to read at age four, though her greatest passion was drawing. Diahann studied art and design at the nearby academy of St. Lawrence University, where she pursued a degree in English with writing as its major. She appeared in the films Pleasantville, Roald Dahl’s The Perfect Pair, Leave Home Alive, and Edward Scissorhands, as well as guest spots on numerous TV shows, including Smallville, Batman: The Brave, and Family Guy. She is currently a casts member of the live-action television series Beauty and the Beast, appearing alongside Eddie Murphy.
