Of all the Broadway cast members who have achieved a wide international following, Betty Buckley has certainly been one of the most popular. She is best known for her lovable, yet sassy attitude and for being one of the few original female actors in the history of Hollywood whose films managed to become popular with both male and female viewers. Much of this popularity can be attributed to the fact that Betty Buckley, unlike many of the other famous stars of her time, was able to successfully transcend race and gender. For example, while most of the other notable stars of her day were expected to act like the wives and motherly figures that they were as a matter of course, Betty bucked the trend by behaving more like the independent woman that she was.
Although Betty spent much of her early days acting in movies, she actually began to receive notice from the American Film Society in which she was listed as one of the best new stars. In her early days, Betty had a series of Cats, one of which was “My Favorite Cat”, a role which she won for playing the character of Ginger. The following year she appeared in “My Fair Lady”, which was directed by Henry Tinker. After that she appeared in “The Best Man”, “The Odds” and “A Christmas Carol”, each of which was a critical and commercial success.
Today, Betty has a variety of varied interests, ranging from performing music, to teaching music, to share her views on political and social issues. She currently teaches at a private music school in Manhattan. Recently, she made an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show in which she discussed her decision to use her voice to help empower women. Her philanthropic efforts extend to several organizations, such as the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the Literacy Foundation, and the East Meets West Foundation. Each of these organizations uses Betty’s strong vocal range to provide fund raising efforts.
