Since her induction into the National Television Hall of Fame, Shakeela has been subjected to the scrutiny of many Indian admirers and Indian critics alike. Her multiple career successes in Bollywood, throughout the decade she has been in, has lent much importance to her persona and her contribution as an actor and actress in the film industry. However, criticism has been pouring in for a number of reasons, one being her body type, which critics say does not flatter Indian women. In fact, Indian actress Neeta Kapoor, who is half Asian, shared her opinion on Shakeela’s appearance while talking about the character of Mrs. Windsor in the biopic ‘Mrs. XI’ where she plays the role of the Indian mother.

According to Neeta, ‘Mrs. XI’ is the first character in the book in which Shakeela is seen in a slim-cut outfit, almost like an Asian mum, who is strict on the kitchen and house chores and yet loving and dutiful to her daughter. Though, it was not intended to be such a turn-off for Indian readers. According to Shakeela biography by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the writer, the character of Mrs. XI was inspired by the real life of Shakeela, a Bengali housewife, who did not carry any personal items when she went to Dharamshala to attend her son’s marriage ceremony. As a result, her absence left her greatly affected by what happened at the marriage.

The author also divulges that Shakeela had undergone weight loss after the death of her son. Therefore, the thin figure with the cravings for fried food, her habitual consumption of junk food and her general neglect of herself was all a part of the scriptural traits portrayed in the biographies. However, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who has written extensively on Indian society and life, says that Shakeela’s character was loosely based on his own mother. He explained, “Shakeela is my mother’s character, but I wanted her to be strong and resilient too. She was robust and tough, and always ready to face life’s difficulties head-on.”

According to Shakeela’s biography, Bhansali chose her name after the Bengali word ‘Odush’ (mighty). This word, which means mighty or awesome, is often used to denote female personalities in Indian languages and is considered a respectable and respected epithet in the Indian society. Shakeela was hailed as an outstanding actress who played vital roles in Indian, independent films during the 1980s. She had some amazing films such as Mona Lisa, Amaretto, Raja, Mumbai Nights, Aparajita, Bhumika in B grade movies, and Arundhati.

Among her numerous awards and honors in the national and international film industries, Bhansali credits her work in India with being one of her proudest moments in her movie career. She further states, “To work and create in India was a great privilege and also an amazing experience. And this has also made me grateful and appreciative for the opportunities and the blessings that India has offered to me. I have learned a lot from the people of India, their culture, their music and their stories. It has been a great experience working with them.”

Although the above mentioned information is quite flattering of Shakeela, one cannot deny that she is just as popular outside India as inside. As was the case with Tamil actress Priyadarshan Soman Nair, a prominent Telugu actor who had a similar kind of face, style and appeal inside India and throughout the world, Shakeela’s current profile is quite comparable with her early days in Bollywood. Similarly, while some movie buffs may still be scratching their heads over Shakeela’s recent outings, many of her previous films have managed to garner significant appreciation from Cinema buffs all across the world. Therefore, it is safe to say that Shakeela has not lost any popularity in the last few years and is on the path towards yet another major breakthrough in her career.
