Suhasi Goradia Dhami: Book I follow in the footsteps of the earlier novels in the genre and works to tie up loose ends left by the previous books. There are still some inconsistencies in plot between the various parts of the story but overall, the plot moves at a smooth pace. The writing style is somewhat similar to that of the first novel in the series, The Pirate’s Bastard, albeit more assured and professional in tone. The plot is also better developed here than in the previous books and follows a definite pattern of individual events rather than an epic stream of events.

The story is told from Suhasi Goradia’s point of view and is thus very descriptive. This not only creates the bond between the author and the reader but also helps us understand the characters and their thoughts and motivations. However, it may not be a good idea to read this book before reading the first novel in the series, The Pirate’s Bastard, which is based on the same city. Although the plot and the story are similar, the writing style may be different. If you have read the prior novel, the transition will be easier.

What is more interesting about Suhasi Goradia Dhami: Book I is her association with the Royal Court. It is established early on in the book that she is related to the Nizams and the Bhils. The Bhil rulers had set up a fortress in the area and the fortress is protected by Suhasi’s grandfather, who is her uncle. The name Suhasi is given to Suhaibhidhpur, which is Suhaibhidhpur’s hometown. This is significant because it establishes the fact that Suhaibhidhpur is the birthplace of Suhasini, who is the novel’s main character.

Suhasi Goradia Dhami: Book II tells how Suhasini rises to power and becomes the most powerful darbar (lord) in the area. Once Suhasini comes to the throne as king, he finds the British army occupying the areas of his kingdom. Suhasini starts his search for his daughter, who is still in the service of the British. Although it is predictable, this novel is always worth a read.
