One of the most interesting and engaging books in South Asia is Sridevi by Satyarth Nayak, who is a renowned Indian author. In this book he narrates the story of a small village of Srinagar in the northern part of India, Srinagar. The village is famous for its age-old cultural practices that date back to the Mughal period. The novel is centered on the experiences of the residents of the village during the eras when Srinagar was an independent state. The novel delves deep into the human psyche and showcases some extraordinary features of the small town and its people.

Sridevi was originally a small village of only about 5000 people but in the beginning it was dominated by two castes: the Hindu Gurus and the Muslims of the same region. Sridevi has always been at the cusp of the divide between the Hindu and Muslim communities in the country and as a result, the caste system was integral to the lives of the people of Srinagar. The novel depicts the life of a young girl called Shimu, who for reasons unknown to her is cast out from the Hindu community and into the lap of the Muslim community. She realizes at a later stage that she desires to be a Srinagar villager like her forefathers and so vows her eternal and unwavering love for the new Srinagar and its founder, the first Chief Wakhan Muhammed. However, when a storm rages through the region and kills the first Chief and several hundred members of his family, Shimu must race against time to save what is left of Srinagar and fight to retain the honor of her house.

Though the novel is largely in the form of a memoir, many events are depicted through short chapters that gradually build up towards the climax of the story. It is obvious that the focus is on Shimu’s relationship with the new Srinagar and also how she struggles to keep a toehold on the shrinking community of Srinagar itself. The novel is set in the backdrop of Partition but its story takes place almost 20 years after the independence of the new nation. The novel portrays the hardships the new residents of Srinagar have to face as well as the hardships faced by the people of Tamil cinema itself.

With Sridevi, we also get to know about the other personalities who were closely associated with the erstwhile state of Srinagar viz. Ram Chandra Verma, Subodh Gupta, Gopi Pillai, Subbulwant Dutt, Maqbool Fida Husain, and many more. All these are characters that the viewer will come to know over the course of the novels and will thus, make them feel as if they have a personal life in Srinagar, just as our favorite Telugu star, Sridevi, does.

Sridevi’s birth place has long been a mystery and till now no writer has managed to explain it in full. Most writers however, have kept certain facts to themselves and mentioned only those aspects that were relevant to the story. This book, on the other hand, tells about Sridevi’s personal life in great details. The novel is a sort of sequel to ‘A Brief History of Tamil Cinema’ by S.S. Rajamouli and tells us more about the early years of independent India when cinema did not exist. The novel also tells us about the pivotal role that Ram Chandra Puri played in popularizing Sridevi.

Youssef Al Hindi’s ‘A Brief History of Tamil Cinema’, which is based largely on his experiences as a filmmaker, is one of the most interesting stories to come out of Tamil Nadu. Sridevi and her rise to fame are told in full colour here. The novelties also include the fact that there was a short lived wonder child artist called Chandani, who was like Sridevi, yet was of a different breed. The story revolves around her life from childhood right up to the time she passed away at the age of 34. All these aspects make this a must read book for all those who are interested in the cinema and the people involved in it.
