Shubha Poonja Biography is one of the most sought after actresses in recent times. She has acted in films from Hindi films to English movies. She is most famous for her lead role in the film Moggina Manasu where she also received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Kannada. She later went on to play the lead role in another award-winning Telugu film, Om Shanti Om. Recently, she became one of the favorites at the International Women’s Awards in London.

Shubha Poonja first came to public attention when she appeared in Tamil movie Baahubali. The then 24-year-old Tamil cinema star was then considered as a new age actor with some experimental roles. She did not receive any significant acknowledgment in English films. However, she did receive strong support from the erstwhile elite of the Indian film industry when she began her international film appearances. When her film career bloomed, she was also appreciated by the elite kodambakkam directors.

Shubha Poonja biography first appeared in Hindi print while doing some work in Kolkata. It was published in Pages 21 and was described as ‘Life of Shubha Poonja’. She was born in Mangalore in the region of Karnataka. Shubha was adopted at a very young age by her aunt and uncle who were prominent leaders in the Hindu mahabaleshwar (trouble faced organization). She was brought up studying Hindu philosophy at home. She was apprenticed in several jobs and retired to live at R.K. Puram in Bangalore.

Shubha moved to Chennai after graduating from Raffles University in Chennai. While there she worked as a journalist for an engineering magazine and a small publishing house. She later joined an advertising agency and served as a field reporter covering the Indian events, cultures and cuisines.

Her most famous film roles are Kismet Konnections (co-starring in Kismet), Devdasi Meend, Kasti Koivist, Paruppahalli and many more. She has also featured in Ajith Kumar’s Mankatha, Mani Ratnam’s Devraj 2, S.S. Rajan’s Baahubali and Apu’s Zorushkaar Kapoor film respectively. She rose to stardom with her three major Facebook movies that flopped big time: Facebook insider, Facebook Savvy, and Welcome…USA. Her Facebook biography states that Shubha Poonja was born in Mumbai and moved with her family to Delhi after graduating from Raffles University.

A Facebook biography posted by Shubha Poonja on her official Instagram mentions her ancestors. She grew up in a modest home with less than 2 bedrooms and one washer and dryer. Her father was a government worker and worked as a translator. Her mother had studied art and literature and worked as a writer. The Poonja family moved to Australia when Shubha was three years old.

In her bio on Facebook, Shubha Poonja has mentioned her two sisters and one brother. She is currently residing in Melbourne, Australia. Her Facebook page mentions that she is passionate about Hindi films and cricket. According to her biography on Facebook, she was studying Hindi at Leytonstone College in London, Ontario, Canada when she decided to return to India to study English. She then enrolled in the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, where she pursued her degree in political science.

As a student, Shubha Poonja did not interact much with Hindu fundamentalism. However, she did observe how people in certain communities in India were treated after the death of a politician. The woman she called “Bhagavati” had passed away and the community was in an uproar. Shubha Poonja understood the situation and spoke out against this violence. This is what brought her to Karnataka in India and began what is now known as Bhagavanipalem or the village of the witches.

Shubha Poonja’s favorite book is a book called Manas (The Indian Queer) by Kamala Markandya. She is also known to have a passion for Indian music and art. In fact, it is rumoured that an audition for a British film called “Eternal Love” made her fall in love with the director and he cast her in the role of the lead dancer. Bhagavanipalem and Bangalore are fast becoming her home.
