The significance of size in Indian society can be traced back to the time of Maharaja Jai Singh, the leader of the Maratha army. As a bride of Jai Singh, she was required to wear the saree of the groom. Because of this, many women of her age wore a sari with the intention of flattering the groom’s bust size. Some even doubled up on their waist size and added saris that were too long for them to wear entirely.

However, it was not until Raja Sawai Jai Singh, the leader of the Sikh empire, saw fit to introduce a uniform dress code that all the women of the land could follow. With this, the bust size of the female population was no longer a matter of embarrassment and became a matter of pride. And to mark her great contribution to the fashion industry, Sawai Jai Singh made all females who had reached the age of puberty wearing saris with a heavy ‘kurta’ (wide piece of cloth) to hide the bust. This was an initiative firstly taken by a male ruler but eventually extended to the entire female population.

The bust size of the female population has changed drastically over the course of time. Earlier busts were always more visible than those of men and dressing rituals were more akin to those of the fairer sex. However, as times have progressed, women have slowly been given the right to participate in public activities alongside men. And as these changes have occurred, so has the need to look good, no matter one’s age or gender. Shahana Goswami shows how this need has led to innovations like the area, which combines the best of western and eastern styles to make a fashion icon out of every woman.

In Shahana Goswami Biography, the author shows how a small woman, who lived a very active life, managed to live up to expectations and become a national treasure. It’s a remarkable portrayal of resilience, determination and the ability to achieve great things despite barriers that were in her path. One can only hope that the same fate may befall this young woman, who is just beginning to make a mark in Indian fashion.
