Richa Chaddha was thought to be tiny in stature until her brother, Vasudevi, who was the father of five daughters, commented that she was much larger than the rest of them. This gave rise to the concept of the ‘Raj’ or the ‘undred hands’ as it is referred to in Rajasthan. This legend has been told about Richa Chaddha in many forms over the years, most frequently by her own family members. It is also said that she had been blessed with a ‘ten hands’ by Brahma during a chariot ceremony, as recorded in the famous Mahabaratha, the earliest epic poem in English written by Kalidasa.
Richa Chaddha was married twice, first to Ajit Jha and then to Ajit Mani. After their marriage, however, she decided to remarry Sudhanshu Shastri, the husband of Ajit Mani. On the death of his wife, she took upon her life as the wife of Ajit Mani. This was in the eighteenth century. Some sources say that she lived at the request of Raja Sawai Jai Singh, who was the King of Rajasthan at that time. It is also believed that she lived at the request of her sister Priyadarshana.
Richa Chaddha’s great grandfather, Bikram Choudhury, was the Lord Brahma, the original king of the Universe. She is believed to be a descendent of Bikram, as the name Bikram is used for the region of India where she was born. Choudhury’s other descendants are identified as Dhamini, Praval, Ksheer, Kolis, Shimu, Kolis’ children, Pushpapati and Bapu. The five children mentioned above are all known to have been married to Brahmins.
Richa Chaddha Biography reveals that Richa Chaddha was very close to her sister Priyadarshana, who was also married to the Brahmins. Subsequently, the couple’s marriage resulted in the birth of Richa’s first born daughter Suri. The marriage did not however lead to any daughter ever being born to either of them. This biography has further given rise to speculations that Richa Chaddha was the daughter of both Ajit Mani and Bikram Choudhury.
