She wanted to create a biography that would keep her in readers’ minds forever.
Neelo (also known as Abida Riaz) was a famous film actress in Pakistan and is one of only a few women of Pakistani descent who had a successful career in Hollywood. Neelo was born in Lahore City and moved to America when she was very young. She is said to be the oldest of seven children that Riaz had with her first husband, Saleh Bokhir. They had two more children during the mid nineteen sixties, all of whom Neelo was not in charge of raising. After her husband died, Neelo formed a relationship with Bokhir’s son Irshad. When Irshad was killed in a shooting accident, Neelo blamed herself, and for a while, avoided any contact with Bokhir’s widow.

Neelo’s association with Bokhir did not end after their separation. She appeared in at least ten movies during the late sixties and seventies, and all but one of those were made in Pakistan. Her first major break into the Hollywood scene came when her friend, the popular artistes Fazal Chishti, cast her in a role in a badly cast movie in Lahore, called Anarkali. The movie, which went on to become a box office hit, saw Neelo portrayed as a sexy, rebellious character who desired to be part of the action. Neelo’s performance earned her a second chance with Hollywood, and the producers allowed her to do a cameo in another famous movie, Shah Rukh Khan’s Arjuna. Neelo’s experience with Pakistani cinema was quite brief, but she managed to feature in a couple of well-received movies, including Akbar’sanka.
Neelo’s relationship with Bollywood screenwriter, Sharukh Khan, also produced some unlikely but memorable partnership. Sharukh wrote and directed a movie script called Haider, which was ultimately used as the basis for Neelo’s second feature, Apartment. Neelo’s association with Apartment was short-lived, as Shah Rukh Khan took over the director’s chair from Chishti. Neelo never returned to the big screen, however, and it is unknown whether or not she ever wrote a script for an Apartment, as well.
Neelo was married three times, first to Dr. Mustafa Kamal, a physician, and later to Ravi Teja, a writer and producer. She divorced him in 1958, having grown increasingly frustrated with their joint sexual relationship, and she remained with her second husband, Mody; however, it is unclear whether or not they ever shared a room. Neelo was married to Yash Chopra, a well-known health advisor and life coach, for the second time, in 1967. Neelo’s last marriage was to Bikram Choudhury, an Indian writer, who wrote a number of scripts for Hollywood, including one of Lawrence Of Arabia’s.
Neela was an important and beloved character in the Hindi movie industry during the 1960s. She appeared in a variety of Hindi films, including Charu Kaundy’s Neelkanth films, where she was played by Bala Kapoor. She later appeared in the hit film India, opposite Chhotelal Chatrapati, and later appeared in a remake of Hindi movie, Aashirain starring Vijay and Sharukh Khan. Neelo’s untimely death at the age of 31 brought about a lot of tributes to her, including a silver memorial statue in her honor. Today, the three statues that are located in her hometown of Bhubaneswar carry the names of Neelo, Bala and Chhotelal, as well as the birthplaces of her parents.
