Neelima Azeem Biography is her memoir of her life. Neelima Azeem was born in December 1959 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India to Hindu missionary parents who were illegally allowed to leave the country. She was brought up in their adopted hometown of Konark, a city which was then known as Bombay. She was a bright, thin child who loved to play with her classmates’ toys. She did not have the beauty or the body of an adult woman, but Neelima Azeem always looked up to women, even when she was young. She appeared in many films during the 1970s, and is best known for her roles in “Chak De! India” and “Babu Bazaar: My Life with the Girls.”

Neelima Azeem was married to a man in his mid thirties in 1969 while still a student in Vellore, India and was pregnant before her marriage. She gave birth to her first child while filming “Amar Bhumida” (the film featuring Bhumida Khan). After the birth of her first child, Neelima Azeem gave up her acting career to concentrate on raising her children, especially her daughter Asha. She took up teaching when she got out of school, at the same time working part-time jobs in an advertising company in order to support herself and Asha. Neelima Azeem took three more children into her marriage, building a large family while working hard at being a good mother.

Neelima Azeem was an aspiring actress in her early days, but in the late sixties she decided to shift loyalties and began a serious relationship with her first husband later in life, a well-to-do film director from a prominent film company in Mumbai. Neelima Azeem’s career began to prosper when the director approached her about adapting his script for the screen, which she did successfully. She went on to direct four feature films, all of which were released within the decade of her marriage to the director. Neelima Azeem’s association with the Indian film industry did not end with these films; in fact, her first major role in a Hindi film was “Nana” (a spoof on Indian mysticism), while her last film “Chak De! (Car Wash) (1984) was directed by none other than an Indian actor from Assam, whom we would now know as Karan Johar.

Neelima Azeem went on to star in five more films in the late sixties and seventies, the last of which was “Shodh”, a movie that depicted the Indian women working in the textile mills in Mumbai. Neelima Azeem proved to be a box office hit with her acting abilities and it was this role that catapulted her to stardom, making her one of the first female actors to receive an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She also became the first woman to appear on the International Film Festival in Italy, receiving the Best Screenplay award for her performance. Neelima Azeem’s acting prowess continued into the eighties, when she featured in “Yeh Suh” and “Chak De! (Car Wash)”.

Neelima Azeem has, over the years, portrayed various genres of characters, all of which have become popular in their own right throughout the world. Some of her best known roles are as a mother in the movie “ikhli chal extra”, as an actress and singer in the hit song by Ravi Verma, and as the lead character in the film “Aabir”. She also appeared in the television series “Happy Days” as Zinda, the girl with a ball and chain who go to a school called Happy Days. Neelima Azeem’s most recent roles have been in action and adventure movies, in TV serials, reality shows, kids’ movies, cartoons and of course, the Telugu genre. Neelima Azeem’s name is very well known among the Hindi speaking population in India, as she is a recipient of numerous honors and awards, which she has received over the years.

Neelima Azeem’s life has spanned almost three decades since her first big break. She began as an actress, dancer, singer and singers in Kolkata before landing in Mumbai. Her late appearance in DD National Magazine made her famous. She has since gone on to star in dozens of movies, a number of which have been nominated for an Oscar. She is also one of the few prominent actresses to have a Best Supporting Actor award for “Killer Joe” opposite Denholm Elliott in 1994.
