As the dimwitted but brilliant psychiatrist, Danziger has a long history of treating patients with different mental disorders. Milla Jovovich certainly fits the bill of a brilliant mental health therapist, and the book chronicles her rise and fall with this character. In the book, we learn how she came to be such a dynamic personality, as well as what pushes her over the edge.

Not surprisingly, the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind earned great reviews upon its release. But even after all of the accolades and media attention, Milla Jovovich still felt like she was a little underappreciated. “I don’t think I’m appreciated at all,” she said. “I always thought of myself as a person who just did her job.” This is not quite the definition of a strong personality, but it is a characteristic that we should expect from an incredible actress like Milla Jovovich. Still, there are some parts of the book that may leave readers disappointed, particularly if they were expecting something a bit more from the erudite biographer of one of the most famous psychics of our time.

Part of the problem might be that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is simply too short. Jovovich takes us only three stories, clocking in at around fifty or so pages. By comparison, the other stories within the series run between forty and fifty pages. Some of the bits that she includes in this book, like an anecdote about her personal past and what inspired her to become a psychic would have been interesting to follow in a novel. However, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind doesn’t go very deep into that particular subject. And while there is occasionally mention of mental illness and what can cause it (including alcohol and cigarette addiction), much of the book is centered on how the psychic’s abilities came about and how she uses them.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind reads as though Milla Jovovich is merely sharing the opinions of her own personality – and even that is difficult to ascertain. When reading this text, one must ask oneself: does this book promote positive self-image or self-doubt? And if so, why? Is this text simply another in a long line of books that tell women how to be more like their mothers? Or is there really something here that can help women create better lives for themselves?
