From her birth, September 7, 1973, Michelle Goh was named Coco Chanel’s little Chinese girl. At that time, her real name was Michelle Goh Hu; the family had that name in addition to another one, Goh, which was more common. She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to a middle-upper class family. In that year, her parents divorced, and she went to live with her mother in Hong Kong, and from there she moved to Singapore, where she was studying music.

She earned a degree in business administration at the University of Washington, but decided to concentrate on singing. She had performed in small bars in Seattle before going to sing in a small restaurant in Singapore, and this led to her hone her skills at the Rainbow Arts Club, in Singapore. This club became her home base, and from there she began to build a reputation as a great singer. It was here that she met her husband Richard Goh.

Michelle Goh is of Chinese descent and was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. The first part of her name was not derived from a Chinese character, but rather, it is Pinyin, a combination of two words (meaning white and red), that stem from the early Hawaiians who wrote the language. Another interesting fact about Michelle Goh’s birth place is that it is an allophone for an ancient Chinese alphabet. The words pronounced by the Chinese are very different from those commonly pronounced by us. Michelle Goh’s first album ‘I’m Goh’ has just been released.

Michelle Goh’s early work was focused on such unlikely sources as the cast of Saturday Night Live and appearing on some of the world famous television shows of the seventies. She sang on ‘I Remember You’, on Billie Jean King’s “I Feel Fantastic” and on the soundtrack of the film King Kong. Other songs that may be familiar to you from your childhood are “Good Vibrations” or even “Don’t Take Me Alive”. However, Goh has also appeared in well mainstream films like Pretty Woman, Rosemary Clooney’s Due Cavalli and the much less renowned Kung Mangai.

Goh grew up in a family where music was a way of life, with her father playing the lute and her mother playing the recorder. As she grew up, she began studying Mandarin Chinese, which was then a rare thing for children in her part of the world. Michelle Goh is now happily settled in Singapore, has made a number of film appearances over the past few years. However, Michelle Goh is happy with her career, telling the press outlet reporters that she enjoys singing and being part of the industry. She admitted though that singing is not her strong point, adding “It’s not my favorite thing to do. I’m good at everything else.”
