Margaret Avery was discovering acting in commercials during the age of twenty-one. She appeared in various television and radio commercials for different companies, including Dell Computers, AT&T, and Capital One. After twenty-two years of steady acting work, in which she appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows, Margaret Atherton retired from acting. However, she still retained her career appearing in various movies and TV shows, such as the 1986 movie Pretty Woman, and the TV show “Fantasy Island” with Kelsey Grammer.

As an actress and singer, Margaret Atherton has had an impressive career. She has appeared in a number of movies, most notably “A Christmas Story”, “The Bodyguard”, “Beverly Hills Chihuahua”, “Swinging Style”, “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective”, “Empire” and “How I Live Now”. She has also had a career playing various supporting characters, including a nurse in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, a clerk in “Get Smart”, a love interest in “A Fish called Wanda”, and a receptionist in “The Perfect Score”. Additionally, she has also had a role in the musical “Hairspray” and the series “Raising Helen”. In between acting, Margaret Avery made several music albums, including “Margaret T. She’s a Big Smile” and “I’m a Wonderful Woman”.

Another of Margaret Atherton’s credits would have to be her contribution to the 1986 movie The Color Purple. This movie would become the first of three Oscar Awards for Best Picture that year, as well as winning several additional awards, including for Best Music Score and Best Original Score. Her role in the movie would be that of Elizabeth Dellor, the mother of one of the main characters, played by Ben Kingsley. Following the death of her husband, Elizabeth takes up the role of sole caretaker of her daughter, Olive. However, when the daughter gets married, she is not able to take on the same role of caretaker, as her sister is allowed to do so.

After taking a much deserved break from movies, Margaret Avery went on to star in the acclaimed book series The Color Purple. She plays the pivotal character of Paula Paltrow, an African American woman who travels back to Maryland during the civil rights era, after being widowed. She is forced to reunite with her childhood friend from college, played by Brad Pitt, who happens to be from Baltimore. Together they uncover the reason for the death of her friend’s husband, and learn how their union could have been prevented. The novel is full of memorable one-liners and could easily be considered a modern classic. It is no surprise that the film adaptation was successful, earning more than three hundred and fifty million dollars worldwide.
