In my previous article, I described the many dimensions to the work of Mantra Biography. However, one more dimension to the work is measurement. Measurement is an important component in defining the quality and value of any ancient text. Ancient texts, even those that predate written records by thousands of years, cannot be analyzed without reference to the measurements that they were written to indicate. The purpose of this article is to describe modern measurements that are commonly used in Mantra Biography.

The first dimension to consider is the size of the text itself. Ancient texts often cover vast areas of space, which makes it difficult to interpret and judge the meaning or importance of the text. A person’s Mantra can be a piece of paper on which monumental works of art are documented and appreciated. However, if the artwork is too large to fit on a single page, it is likely that the art work will be lost. Modern readers can judge the importance and value of the art work by its size.

The second dimension to consider in assessing the meaning of ancient texts is ‘the distance between points.’ This dimension is a measure of how far away from the reader (or the reader’s point of reference, if that is a separate location) the text actually is. Since time immemorial, people have been measuring distances, even those farthest places in the physical world.

These measurements can range widely in their precision. Some modern readers may measure anything from the distance between the nearest star to the next largest galaxy. Others may insist on very precise measurements to ensure that they do not waste energy or effort by reading a text that is very long because it was written to represent an extremely insignificant part of its world at least from their perspective. It is possible for any reader to judge the importance and worth of any work based on these dimensions, even those dimensions that do not directly concern size. For example, the size of the universe can be judged by how many billions of stars it contains, while ‘the number of trees’ on earth can be judged on the basis of the number of species of plants that exist, even when those species exist in incredibly diverse settings.

The third dimension to consider in Mantra Biographies is ‘language.’ While there are many ways to categorize languages, there are also a great many ways to convey meanings across languages. The connotations of one language can differ greatly from another language. Even if two languages are spoken by the same individual, their meanings can vastly vary from those connoted by another. When writing a biography or biographies of living persons, the use of language is especially important, since the reader’s familiarity with the language and its myriad ways will affect how he or she responds to the text. If a reader cannot understand the inherent meaning of the text, there is no point to reading it.

These three dimensions of the dimensions of meaning in Mantra Biographies are the most important to pay attention to, when constructing a text that will make an impact on a reader. This is not to say that other dimensions are less significant, since they certainly are to some extent. However, these three dimensions are the ones that most readers tend to focus on first, making the significance of the text’s other dimensions secondary.
