Madeline Carroll was born in segregated Mississippi during the 1950’s. At a young age, her parents divorced when she was only six years old. She moved with her mother and sisters to New Orleans, which was then calling Mississippi Delta. She was one of seven children and grew up in what is now referred to as Post-Katrina America. Madeline’s childhood was characterized by abuse and neglect, and she was physically and sexually abused as a child.

Madeline became known as an actress in her early years in movies such as Swing Vote (with James Stewart), All about Eve (with Richard Burton), and As Good As It Gets (with Carol Burnett). Eventually, she went on to play the character of Nurse Ratchem in the movie version of Nurse Jackie. Then, she continued with small roles in various other movies, most notably the television drama Webster, and she appeared in some feature films. Madeline’s status as an American actress is mostly attributed to the role that she played in the TV show, Swing Vote. In fact, Madeline’s first credit in her native America was in the play We Are Marshall -essentially a small role.

Of these, the psychological thriller A Raisin in the Shade, which Madeline co-starred in, is Madeline’s only notable role. The more important of these films is Madeline’s contribution to the Los Angeles scene, which earned her the admiration of many in the Hollywood community.

When Madeline was a young girl, her mother’s boyfriend, Lewis Carlin, became so frustrated with her attitude that he dumped her. Though Madeline was devastated, she knew that she had great talent, so she began studying acting seriously under the tutelage of her Uncle Artie Harness, who was one of the most famous comedians of his day. Eventually, Madeline made her first professional acting debut in the comedy classic Another Man’s Child (1947). She played the starring role in the second film adaptation of this play as well.

As a star actress, Madeline’s roles increased to more substantial ones, with some of her finest roles coming in movies set in New York or Hollywood. In Meet the Parents (ennypring Pictures), she plays Pennywise the clown; in Grease (Esquire Films), she plays a waitress; in High School Confidential (Aege Studios), she stars as Leelee Sobieski, an aspiring dancer; in Grease II: The Search (Ace Entertainment Group), she plays Lauren Bacall’s love interest; and in Stagecoach (Deneuve/Fox Feature Pictures), she plays Dr. Rachel Wood. Madeline’s role in the latter film, which was written by her Uncle Artie Harness, makes it one of the few films of this era of Hollywood where she doesn’t speak. Her appearance in the film was minimal, but her performance was as good as it could get. Madeline is perhaps best known from her Broadway appearances, which often appear on the list of the best shows of all time.
