Lakshmi Gopalaswamy was born in an agricultural community called Bengali Bairat near Belgaum in Bengal. Her father worked as a driver for a rubber company, while her mother stayed at home to take care of the family. The family was very poor and they survived on small meagre earnings from the local vegetable fields. When she was just 16 years old, she was married to a man named Vijay Kumar and lived with him in their modest home in Belgaum. Things changed when she got a degree in law and this enabled her to move to Bengaluru to study for the postgraduate degree in Law that she eventually earned from Ruparel College in Calcutta.

In her early days in Bengaluru, Gopalaswamy was a popular writer and editor in the local Urdu newspaper.
