Komal Kumar, better known by his mononym Komal, is an Indian screen actor and movie producer best known for his memorable work in Kannada movies. He made his first acting debut in super high profile comedy Kannada Velayudham. From there he appeared in more commercial movies like Welcome Back! and Happy Days, and then slowly began to play smaller roles in Hindi movies. Komal’s rise to stardom in the mid-90s is remarkable, as most Indian screen actors had been largely unknown outside their home country prior to that decade.

Komal’s rise to fame came when Rajinis approached him to do some acting lessons and asked him to give his mother’s maiden name as Komal. Komal was thrilled at the thought of becoming a part of Hindi films, and his first experience of Hindi films was in the film Bandhan ka Kiya. Komal did well in the film and was nominated for an Oscar.
