Kirti Kulhari was a member of the far-left Workers’ Party for six decades, and later was a founding member of the CPI (Mulathi). She is best known for her role as a CPI (Mulathi) member during the emergency period of the 1980s. Kirti has also been associated with the Revolutionary Workers Party (RWP), the CPM, and the communist left parties in West Bengal and Kerala.” Kirti’s biography on Wiki includes this biographical data: “A congress delegate, Kirti was active in struggles for the rights of the Bengalis in India’s communal turmoil. She was arrested and jailed in connection with a blast that took place near a predominantly Hindu area of south India.
Kirti was married twice, first to Mina Prabhu Varma, and then to Subodh complain, and she was active in the Indian freedom movement during the 1950s. Kirti was arrested along with other comrades of Subodh while she was participating in a sabotage action in Mumbai. Kirti played an important role in thwarting the Indian police’s attempt to crush the fermenting events in Mumbai and she was later awarded the Mahatma Gandhi Prize for her efforts to build a democratic government in India.
