Kay Francis was born in Glenwood Springs, New York where her parents were wealthy English immigrants from Ireland. Kay grew up surrounded by an acting community that was vibrant and close-knit. She had a reputation for being a smart and passionate young woman, and this combination served her well during the years she spent acting. She was a standout member of the Glenwood Springs High School drama club where she honed her skills and cultivated a wide array of skills including writing, dancing, acting, stage direction and even dancing. In 1930 she left high school to spend the summer months performing in various talent shows in New York City, and she gained notice as an attractive and versatile performer as well.

Her screenplays were found in such Hollywood favorites as Blue Springs (with Bogie), Romance, Beatrice in King Kong, Das Boots, Rounders and many more. Kay Francis was nominated for an Academy Award for her contribution to the genre of mystery in which she worked, Das Boots. Kay Francis’ career spanned four decades, the first two of which saw her starring in such films as Nobody Speaks, A Christmas Story and Charlie Brown’s Own Dog. She also had an acclaimed turn as a producer in such films as Mary Shelly’s Wildfire.

Kay Francis is not without her detractors. Some of her early movies like An Officer and an Abduction were considered rather embarrassing by some in the industry. These films nonetheless, gained her the attention of the Academy Awards and the chance to showcase her talent on the big screen. As a result of her association with the early Hollywood motion picture industry, Kay Francis is a name that is remembered fondly by first-time viewers of today. Even those that have seen many of her films thought her performances were very tender and endearing.
