Jayamala was born in 18ARR in Kannur, India where her parents migrated from, where they were given political and other privileges by the British. Jayamala’s middle name was given by her great grandmother. Jayamala was a pupil of Dr. Hsing H. M. Udayin, who was a famous educator, botanist and geographer. Dr. Udayin taught Jayamala her scientific aptitude and that she should not be held back by her shortcomings as a woman of child bearing age. He was a great proponent of vegetarianism and favored methods of living which did not include animal products.

Jayamala was married to Sanjoy Kumar Sahoo, who was a prominent leader in People’s Democratic Party. The two of them experienced a difficult life during the tenure of union; the union eventually dissolved when Jayamala expressed a desire to become a doctor. To avoid trouble with the law, Jayamala chose to use her maiden name ‘Sanjoy’ because the law made it mandatory for women over twenty-five years old to use their maiden names while filing tax returns. Sanjoy chose to keep his last name secret therefore.
Another important part of Jayamala’s life is that she was a disciple of Thanarak Bali, who is also popularly known as Dr. Bhagavati. Bhagavati is the founder of the Buddhist faith in India. He is the author of numerous books including ‘The Manual of the Kings’, ‘The Lotus Papers’ and ‘The Diamond Palace’. In fact, Dr. Bhagavati had introduced Jayamala to the science of yoga by teaching her the principles of yogic philosophy. Jayamala was deeply influenced by Dr. Bhagavati’s teachings and used many of his sayings in her daily life.
Jayamala was active during the Republic days and was deeply involved in revolutionary politics. She was arrested several times but was acquitted on all charges. It is rumoured that the FBI had been following her from San Francisco, California since early nineteen eighties. After her acquittal, she decided to move to New Delhi where she lived for the next thirty-seven years. A lot of political turmoil was going on in India at the time and so she was forced to find work outside her home country.
On 28 may 1990, Jayamala was featured in her first Kannada film “Nanban”. The film was directed by S.S. Rajamouli and starred Ajith Kumar, Anushka Shetty, Soumik Mukherjee, Arjun Rampal, Kavita Mitra, Sudhanshu Sutar and Yash Raj. The film was a flop but Rajamouli still went on to make some more movies in the genre. Recently, Ajith has also become popular in India with his hit series “The Godfather” and has managed to gross well over six hundred million dollars. Jayamala also made a cameo in another popular movie of Rajamouli “Aakash”.
