Alexander has also portrayed other important characters in both the United States and worldwide media, including the president of Uganda, Mr. Kampai; the leader of the People’s Republic of China, Premier Li Kung; the governor of California, Jerry Brown; and a candidate for Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong. Her extensive resume is filled with varied experiences that are testament to her versatility as an actress. Her first experience in movies was playing the lead role of Daphne Du Maurier in the movie The Royal Scam. Since then, she has gone on to play different characters in various popular TV shows, such as ER, Gossip Girl, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Saved My Life. Her role as the South Africa representative in the Miss Universe pageant in 2021 was also a great exposure of herself as an actor/actress.
Jane Alexander has also gained international prominence because of her three consecutive wins for the Satellite Award for Outstanding Actress in a Leading Role category at the Satellite Awards. Among the awards she achieved, she became the first woman to win the Satellite Awards for three consecutive years. She succeeded in unseating heavy favorite Victoria Beckham from the category of “actresses who have made history” while her rival was disqualified after receiving one of only two votes. Though her win might have come as a surprise to many, Jane Alexander still felt somewhat overwhelmed by the whole ordeal.
Another of Jane Alexander’s accomplishments is that of being a former Miss Canada. Her crowning as a result of her winning performance in the Miss Canada pageant is one of the best achievements in the Miss Universe history. Alexander served as a participant in the Miss Universe Canada event, but lost out to Paula Abdul in the Beauty queen competition. Despite her loss, Alexander had already achieved something that few expected to achieve when she entered the pageant – becoming a role model for women all around the world. She used her time on the show to further promote the gay community, especially the young women of color.
Though she admitted to feeling somewhat intimidated by Miss Arabia and her entourage, Jane Alexander quickly made it clear that she was more than ready to take on the role of a global icon. On her return home to her native south Africa, she began to experience the same kinds of discrimination that she had experienced while living in the United States. Though her experience did not directly lead to her selection as a speaker at the 1969 World’s Fair, it definitely served as a learning experience for her. It showed her how important it was to continue working hard at being positive in spite of negative circumstances. After her graduation from the national gallery, Jane continued to work hard, eventually achieving everything she had set out to do.
