Imogene Coca is best known as the spunky elfin wannabe come-of-the-woods with the incredibly versatile face that often featured in memorable skits on the hugely popular You Show of late. Her illustrious career spans from the early fifties to the end of the twentieth century, spanning nearly all genres of popular television. She is also best known for her appearances on the groundbreaking funny movies The Bill Laughton Show, Mork and Mindy, Dinner For One and the short-lived drama School Days. Most notably though, she voiced the lovable but mischievous Snow White in the original Disney film.

Imogene became famous through her first marriage to Richard Burton and her legendary performance as the spunky duchess in the film version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The success of those performances brought her the lead role in the Broadway musical Les Miserables, which was initially made without her knowledge by her then agent, Ben Heffner. After performing the lead role in the popular revival of Les Miserables, Imogene was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance and ended up winning the award for Best Actress in a Musical. Her other notable roles include the title role in Arthur, which she also sang, and the lead role in the movie version of Hamlet.

Imogene became known to American audiences through her appearances on the popular TV sitcom Welcome Back Kotter. The critically acclaimed sitcom became the second most watched comedy in the history of TV behind The Simpsons. Imogene was one of the earliest African-American characters to be featured on an American television show. While her character was originally based on a stereotype of the uptight, virtuous white woman, she was given more diversity in the later seasons. The writers even began to give Imogene a different persona at times, creating her own complex personality. She was often the butt of many a cruel joke by her coworkers, but she always returned in great fashion, proving that black female comedians can have equal footing with their Caucasian counterparts.

Imogene Show continues to enjoy a large popularity among African Americans and their lovers alike. This is partly due to her versatility, but she has also achieved popularity through a successful theater tour in her native Nigeria. Imogene was also a finalist for the Lead Role in Disney’s The Lion King, which catapulted her into stardom. Imogene’s eclectic resume and stage presence makes her a versatile performer capable of filling the supporting roles in both modern and classic comedies. Imogene Show continues to provide audiences with funny and memorable comedy and will continue to entertain.

Imogene has been cast in a variety of different types of roles throughout her lifetime, including an uncredited role in Disney’s Shrek, as well as recurring guest appearances on shows such as The Incredible Hulk, Star Trek: The Original Series, Family Guy, and Married with Children. Imogene’s other notable role was in the Broadway play, We Have All Been Very Bad. Imogene is also a skilled stand-up comic, having released several CDs of her one-liners, and her credits include appearances on Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show, and The Simpsons.

Imogene Coca is perhaps best known for her starring role as the lovable, spunky “Precious” in the musical Hair. She is currently in pre-production on a film based on the life of Precious, the original singer of the Rent collections of which she was a major figure. Imogene is expected to receive the 2021 Satellite Awards’ Best Actress award for her role as Precious.
